Dwight Garner, rock music, and New Journalism

The first issue of Rolling Stone is dated November 9, 1967.

So let's take a closer look at this remarkable assertion.

Hunter Thompson's first 4 articles for Rolling Stone:

Fear and Loathing?  1971?  Rock music faded in importance?

Perhaps Dwight can be forgiven since he was just 6 years old at the time, but rock was still peaking in 1971.  Give a listen if you don't believe me.

According to Rolling Stone owner Jann Wenner, Tom Wolfe received his first assignment from the magazine in 1970.

1970?  Wasn't that the year that Credence gave "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" an 11-minute workout?
