Located in the southern tip of South Carolina, Beaufort is the state's 4th-fastest growing county.  Its population has increased 567% since 1950, compared to a 17% decrease since its 1940 peak in Marlboro County, South Carolina's unhealthiest. Beaufort's nonwhite population is 32.6%, compared to 60.4% in Marlboro.
