A closer look at Wisconsin's population loss: Price County

Price County's early growth can be summed in one word:  pine.   Most of these trees were cleared by the end of the 19th century, and then the focus turned to hardwoods.  The county's population peaked 18,517 in 1920.  Since then it's been a series of ups and downs -- mostly downs, including a 22% drop in population from 1940 to 1960.  Since 2000, the county's population has decreased an estimated 13.8%.

Price has the dubious distinction of being the Wisconsin county with the greatest projected percent decline in population from 2010 to 2040.  Hands down.

As of July 1, 2014, 24.0% of Price County's population is 65 and over, significantly above the state average of 15.2%.   Its 0-to-4 demographic is 3.9%, well below the state average 5.9%.
