A Building of "Elegant Simplicity": The New (in 1964) Salt Lake City Public Library

The typing room.

Ron, here we have our public typing room where patrons of the library, students, can come in, and after they have done their research and they wish to type it up, they can operate our typewriters here and finish up their thesis in fine shape.

WorkFlowy Enters My Life

Discovered at  5 Tools for Outlining Your Novel. (GalleyCat, 9/13/2012)

Since I'm big on lists and outlining,  I'll find many uses for WorkFlowy.

Sometimes I think I was born too soon.

Sample note cards from research on business history conducted at the high-rise UMass Library in the spring of 1978.

OK, I didn't use WorkFlowy to full effect here -- what's shown below can be accomplished in Word -- but at least I got a toe wet.

Event Planning @ the Library

Library prevents, non-city, non-library events in building.  (Watertown Daily Times, 9/13/2012)

Excerpt:  Library Director Barbara J. Wheeler complained that her staff has to stay past hours to supervise outside events and lock up the building afterward. She said receptions often produce residual food odors, and users don’t always clean up after their events.

“It’s just not our job to be wedding planners and event planners,” she said.

Board member Maxine M. Quigg was not at the meeting but sent an email pleading against the policy. She said she believes the library has gained patrons through weddings and events, and the library is a center for the community.

Yes, Maxine, a center, not a doormat.

According to the article, this service brought in $2,000 in revenue in 2011,  not enough to cover costs, I imagine.  I hope that Wheeler documented the staff time required and specific duties involved in her staff's after-hours supervision and clean-up..

Here's a summary for the year 2010 of the Boston Public Library's experience of hosting weddings.  (Love among the volumes, Boston Globe, 8/14/2011)

Weddings and other special events brought in $825,000 last year but netted only $220,000 after expenses that include providing extra custodians and security onsite, utility costs, and salaries for the events office. Still, that additional revenue bought new check-out machines and helped fund the new computer center.

Event planning @ the library is no picnic, but it can be a successful venture, although not when it's squarely placed on the backs of library staff.  It needs to be a separate operation, its own department, so to speak.

One final comment.

Anyone who works (or worked) in a library that welcomes outside, no-library-connection-whatsoever events (parties, showers, receptions) knows that some groups tend to be _____________,  Based on my experience at Middleton, I can reel off a half dozen adjectives with the snap of a finger.

Sauk City library gets 3-D printer.  (Portage Daily Register. 9/12/2012)

Excerpt: Miller said the $2,000 printer is part of the library’s new focus on transforming the library into a community place for people who want to create. One of the first things he did when he was hired as the library’s director was form a community club for people interested in learning to program simple, open-source computer boards.

Who's Running for State Office in Wisconsin 2012: 24th Assembly District (General Election Edition)

The New Assembly 24th District.  (Germantown Now, 6/8/2012)

Excerpt:     The new District 24 no longer contains deep red Richfield and most of the Falls. Instead, it stretches east from Germantown to include many Democratic areas. The new district is much less compact, consisting of a crescent stretching from one corner of Menomonee Falls all the way to Glendale. Chunks were taken out of several different towns, in order to reach the desired voter mix. The result is a Rorschach test of a district (kind of reminds me of an elephant's head).

The average amont of time workers over 55 remained jobless was about 44 weeks.
